Froman House The Jacob Froman House is a prime example of don’t judge a book by its cover.

When Ralph and Ruth purchased the initial farm land in 1996, it appeared to be just another 1860’s vernacular farm house sorely in need of repair. The tall old house had been unoccupied for some time and was being used to confine dogs and cats. Serious consideration was given to demolishing the house. During a tour of the house after its purchase, Ralph became curious about a 15 inch thick wall between the living room and dining room since wood frame houses do not normally have walls of this thickness. He took a hammer and knocked a hole in the living room and found logs. That did it…….this house has some history! Ralph and Ruth reconsidered demolition and decided to repair and modernize, but not fully restore the house to its original Log House construction.

Ralph called on his good friend, Frances (Keightley) Mosley, a co-author of the Kentucky Heritage Council’s 1998 Historic Sites of Harrodsburg and Mercer County, Kentucky. Francis began the arduous task of tracing the history of the house with some unbelievable results. Ownership and construction of the original house was traced back to Jacob Froman. The original construction consisted of a one room log house constructed in 1783 by Jacob Froman. The logs that were discovered were roughly trimmed with the bark left on two sides. By virtue of this date, it may be the oldest standing residence in Kentucky.
